There are now over 2.8 billion social media profiles in the world, which is almost half the world’s population.
Social media is not just something a business should consider, it is an absolute necessity so that they can stay competitive in their industry. Approximately 80 percent of internet users visit a social network or blog on a consistent basis, which is why it is imperative that a business keep up to date with social media trends so that they know they are represented on the right sites to reach the largest number of potential customers. Almost 40 percent of social media users post brand related content on their own personal pages reaching all of their “friends”, so as you would expect, branding on social media is a great way to improve your business’ marketing effectiveness. This is extremely important, because many social media sites have seen growth in the double digit rates every year since their inception. A lot of business owners realize this and have started to grow along with them by making Social Media a priority in their marketing plan. In fact, almost 40 percent of CEO’s consider social media a high priority item for their business. That number is likely to grow in the coming years, so it’s time to join the bandwagon and join the social media phenomenon, and don’t forget Muv Digital can help you do that!
Social Media websites:
Facebook: Surpassing the 1 billion users mark is no simple feat, and its possible Facebook may hit that mark within the next two years. With over 100 billion friendships Facebook is by far the dominant social networking site on the World Wide Web. Although Facebook growth may be slowing down to the high double digits, with over 880 million users it will no doubt top the 1 billion mark in the coming years. There are over 2.7 billion likes on Facebook, and that number will only skyrocket in the coming years as more businesses embrace the Facebook phenomenon. Facebook business pages are a great way to spread brand awareness and information to people that like your business. The average Facebook user has over 130 friends, which means that a business with 1000 likes can be seen by up to 130,000 people for posts and newsfeeds. Advertising on Facebook can also be a very lucrative way to get clicks to your website as well as convert traffic into likes, increasing your brand awareness. Businesses that think Facebook is still for college students are way behind the mark, as the fastest growing sector of Facebook users are females ages 55-65. As the baby boomers find their way on to Facebook Timeline, optimizing a business Facebook page has never been so imperative for any business looking to build brand awareness and reach out to a larger customer base.
Twitter: There are over 465 million twitter accounts, and there can be as many as 175 million tweets in one day making Twitter one of the best platforms for businesses to reach out to fans. Tweeting deals and promotions is often one of the best ways for a business to stay on top of the competition, especially once they have generated enough followers. Unlike Facebook, Twitter growth is not slowing down by any means and will continue to see massive growth in the coming years. Averaging approximately 11 new accounts per second, Twitter will likely hold its place as the number two social media platform in terms of users behind Facebook’s 880 million plus. Twitter may not be your favorite platform to receive or display information but it is an invaluable tool to any business because of how fast and dynamic information can be sent out to followers on a daily basis. In fact, 75 percent of larger companies use twitter as a marketing tool, so it is time to stop being part of the minority and make sure you keep tweeting to reach out to followers and attract more fans.
Google +: Google plus may not have the user base that a Facebook or Twitter has, but I would never underestimate an initiative that Google rolls out that could have massive benefits to users beyond what Facebook and Twitter offer. Gmail is one of the most convenient email platforms, and it is easy to convert your Gmail account into a Google plus account to start connecting with others in your circle. It might not be nearly as dynamic as Facebook or Twitter, but I would not be surprised if Google finds a way to build its way deeper into the social media market by expanding the Google plus platform. Although the LinkedIn network is still larger than the Google plus network, we see Google plus becoming a more dominant force in the social media network in the coming years. There are now well over 100 million active users on Google plus, and I would not be surprised to see that number skyrocket in the coming years because of how valuable and effective the Google brand has become.
Linkedin: There are approximately 150 million members on Linkedin as of 2012. Linkedin has grown tremendously over the past few years, growing over 40 percent since 2011. As a much less saturated market than Facebook, Linkedin will continue to grow in the double digits for the next few years. Linkedin is a great way for companies to reach out to other companies, as well as recruit and hire new employees. Most members are between 25-55, and have significant positions in their company, as approximately 40 percent are a manager, director, owner, executive, or vice president. Businesses can use LinkedIn to keep track of their employee base, as well as reach out to new employees. Don’t underestimate the value of Linkedin, as it can be just as valuable to a business as it is for an employee or someone out of work.
Pinterest is the strongest emerging social media website out there and is developing a massive following. With over one hundred million dollars in funding, Pinterest is not going anywhere anytime soon, and will be expanding massively in the coming years. Pinterest has recently launched their new business profiles, so building a Pinterest profile for your business has never been easier. Several recent studies show that Pinterest can have a greater influence on eCommerce purchases online than any other social media platform because you can directly pin your products to any board. Additionally, Pinterest now has over 10 million unique visitors per month and is still growing fast.
